SWING MOTOR AND GEARBOX GUIDE

An excavator swing motor, swing gearbox and complete swing-drive assembly are related but different parts. Define the required section and compare the complete reference, machine model, ports, mounting, shaft or pinion and brake configuration before quotation.

Swing motor

Hydraulic motor section that provides rotary power for upper-structure swing.

Swing gearbox

Reduction section that transfers motor output to the swing pinion and bearing gear.

Complete swing drive

Motor and gearbox supplied together as a matched assembly.

How to identify the correct excavator swing motor

  1. Provide the excavator model, serial number and complete motor reference.
  2. Show the nameplate, hydraulic ports, attached valve block and top cover.
  3. Photograph the mounting flange and motor-to-gearbox shaft or spline.
  4. State whether the swing gearbox and pinion are included.
  5. Record the required quantity, acceptable condition and destination country.

Fitment details to compare

  • Motor series, displacement and complete suffix
  • Mounting bolt pattern and pilot diameter
  • Main, drain and pilot port size and position
  • Brake, relief and anti-reaction valve arrangement
  • Output shaft or spline connection
  • Gearbox reduction ratio, output pinion and tooth details when applicable

Do not confuse the motor with the gearbox

A quotation for a swing motor does not automatically include the reduction gearbox or output pinion. Likewise, a swing gearbox may be supplied without the hydraulic motor. Write the required scope in the RFQ and ask the supplier to list the included components.

Common swing-system symptoms

Slow swing, drift, excessive free play, abnormal noise, oil leakage or failure to hold can involve the motor, brake, valve, gearbox, pinion, swing bearing, hydraulic supply or control circuit. A symptom helps explain the problem but should not replace part-number identification.

Common ordering mistakes

  • Using only the machine model without the motor label
  • Assuming a complete swing drive is included
  • Ignoring shaft, spline or pinion differences
  • Comparing used and new quotations as if the condition were identical
  • Failing to document attached valves and fittings

Excavator swing motor FAQ

Is a swing motor the same as a swing gearbox?

No. The motor is hydraulic; the gearbox is mechanical reduction. They can be supplied separately or as a complete assembly.

Can the swing motor be matched from the machine model?

The model is useful, but the complete motor reference and machine serial range are stronger evidence.

Should the output pinion be included?

Only when the required scope and quoted gearbox configuration include it. Ask for an itemized quotation.

When the swing-motor label is unreadable

Photograph the installed orientation before disconnecting hoses, then record the port layout, valve block, mounting pattern, motor shaft or spline and gearbox reference. Include the excavator serial number and photos of the complete swing-drive assembly from several sides.

These details help separate visually similar units, but internal displacement, relief settings and brake configuration may still require a confirmed reference. The quotation should show whether the offered result is a confirmed match or a candidate awaiting further evidence.

Installation and commissioning records

Keep photos of the received reference, ports, shaft, valve block and included fittings before installation. Record hydraulic-system cleanliness, filter work, oil condition and the gearbox oil specification when the gearbox is involved. After commissioning, check for leakage, abnormal noise, free play and stable swing in both directions, then retain the results with the order record.

Retain the removed unit and its label until the replacement is verified.
